Personality: Major Kaidan Alenko, the second human Spectre in history, isn’t what most people would expect in a number of ways. He is career military, with over ten years of service and over a dozen special commendations. On the battlefield is he capable, decisive, and sure in his abilities. In one word: formidable. But outside of that he often wears a number of faces. People see him as quiet, withdrawn, and polite, especially around those with authority. In casual conversation, either outside of rank or with those closer to his own, he has a wry (and sometimes blunt) sense of humor. He’s generally not the kind of person to make waves, and therefore is sometimes easy to dismiss.
The root of much of this is that Kaidan is a thinker. Or, maybe more accurately, an overthinker. He spends a lot of time considering matters very carefully, and early on Shepard makes use of Kaidan’s keen insight on everything from missions, to other crewmates, to galactic politics. But on the less positive side, Kaidan can often become mired in dilemmas that are less clear cut, and can take quite a long time to let something go. He is always assessing; always judging, and sometimes his judgements can come out rather harsh.
Kaidan, when it comes down to it, is a good person, not just at heart but through concerted effort. He has a high standard of personal integrity to which he holds himself but also the rest of the universe, and when other people fall short he isn’t shy about letting his feelings be known. That said, he is startling open-minded for a man who grew up on Earth, and judges all people equally, regardless of race, gender, sex, nationality, or allegiance (unless maybe you’re Cerberus). Above all, he believes in doing the right thing. He sees the big picture and thinks about himself last when the needs of others are at stake. After his near brush with death on Mars, he tells Shepard later than his mind didn’t flash towards his own life, but to the lives of all the people back on Earth that were going to be destroyed by the Reapers. He joined the Alliance not because of an obligation to family, but a personal obligation to use his powers to help people.
The reasons behind that, however, strike to the core of what defines Kaidan’s personality the most: the incident at BAaT. When Kaidan lashed out and killed Vyrnnus, he drove away the person he most wanted to protect, and combined with the shock of taking his first life, he vowed to never let something like that happen again. It’s clear that for awhile he was hesitant to use them at all, given that he joined the Sentinel corps, developing dual skills in technology-based combat, instead of becoming an Adept and developing his already considerable biotics even further. He even admits to Shepard that, at least early on, he tended to hold back when using his biotics on organics. Kaidan commands a considerable amount of self-control, not only when it comes to his powers, but also when it comes to his emotions. Knowing this fact, it’s clear that his sometimes placid personality is a side effect of all the things he holds in check. Not that this control is at all perfect. While suppressed, one can see the anger that once led to killing a man slip out from time to time, usually in regards to the atrocities of the Reapers and the Illusive Man. His reaction to meeting the resurrected Shepard on Horizon is one of anger born out of a sense of betrayal and a lingering survivor’s guilt swept rather suddenly out from under him. In fact, Kaidan feels more deeply than many would realize at first, these moments often disguised by restrained pauses and exhalations of breath. And while he keeps a tight lid on how he acts, it’s clear that that self-control doesn’t extend quite as well to his words. This includes his aforementioned outbursts of morality policing, but on the lighter side, while his mind is occupied he tends to blurt out inane surface thoughts and occasionally vaguely perverted comments that sometimes leave him to backpedal furiously.
He isn’t perfect, but that’s something Kaidan knows all too well. He’s a rare human being in the regard that he listens to the input of others, admits his mistakes, and learns from them. He could have easily allowed the incident at BAaT to lead him down a path of bitterness and angst, but instead he chose to absorb, adapt, and move on with his life the best way he could. Deep down, Kaidan is a bit of an idealist and a romantic, but he’s been around enough to be cynical about the way the world really works. Not that this doesn’t stop him from striving for those ideals and trying to see the best in others. But he’s all too human. He makes rash judgements when his emotions are high just like many people would. Kaidan isn’t quite able to process that Cerberus might not have always been an organization built entirely out of evil until he meets defectors that cast his black and white view of it into shades of grey.
Relationships mean a lot to Kaidan, both romantic and otherwise. He feels deeply for people and while he’s sometimes slow to let people in, he’s incredibly loyal to those he cares for. He will sacrifice and go to great lengths to protect them, especially the ones he feels responsible for. During the war, he spends much of his time aboard the ship looking for the Biotics Division students under his command.
Kaidan is, however, very humble. While he’s confident in his skills he carries a lot of self-doubt about himself in general, though he doesn’t usually let that self-doubt show on the surface. He accepts his promotions reluctantly but with great respect for the gravity of their responsibility. He doesn’t desire power but can’t entirely deny that he has the skills for the job, or that fact that he can do the most good that way. These traits, combined with his obvious patience, make him well suited to the role of a leader and teacher.
In many ways he’s a model Marine - diligent, respectful, and a firm believer in following rules. Over time, and the course of the series, he proves that he can also be easy-going, kind, and able to unbend and cut loose when the time is right. His ability to make friends is contingent on people giving him time and a chance to see past the no-nonsense soldier to the awkward, troubled, and well-meaning person he is underneath.
Abilities: Kaidan is a human biotic and a Sentinel class soldier, meaning in combat he uses a combination of biotic abilities (similar to telekinesis) and tech-based attacks and skills. For the sake of cohesion, his skillset will be a hybrid of his abilities in both ME 1 and ME 3.
Augment Skillset: Security
Sample: [This isn't the Normandy by a longshot. He's had a few days to get used to the idea that he's been catapulted away from the fight for the very soul of the galaxy, more or less, and into this. Even as he walks through the halls he isn't sure if he should step into line and wait it out like a good soldier or try to reave out the side of the ship and hope the Atroma, whoever they were, would send him home rather than risk an incident.
Or he'd know just what Shepard felt when she got spaced.
This inner conflict isn't terribly visible from the outside. While clearly restless, Kaidan keeps up a mask of calmness as he pokes about ship with a critical eye. He isn’t quite sure how this mess is even flying, but it’s mostly feeling rather than fact. Even now he makes an aborted gesture to call up the omni-tool that isn’t there and lets out a stilted sigh of frustration and quiet anger bubbling just under the surface. There’s no way to get a real read on these ships, nor any way to try to put out a call for help of some kind.
So it seems he’s alone, for the time being. This only strengthens his resolve. Kaidan Alenko is a soldier, not a dancing pyjak, and he’ll do whatever it takes.]

- Biotics:
- Lift and Throw: While both are treated as separate skill trees in the game, they are both forms of basic telekinesis that can, as the name implies, lift and move people and/or objects, and often violently. Lifting, however, effectively lightens the mass of the affected object, allowing it to be moved or propelled even easier. The biotic force of a throw may also be applied to a physical punch or kick if needed.
- Barrier: A biotic field that soaks damage, usually used to bolster personal armor and shields, but arguably could be used without either to a reduced effect. It can only prevent damage from small, rapid moving projectiles, however, and not melee attacks, debris, or environmental hazards. Additionally, the barrier can be ‘detonated’ to release a small burst of force (see: lift and throw) at the cost of losing the use of the barrier until it can be reactivated.
- Reave: A biotic attack that drains health and energy from an enemy, weakening barriers and armor while bolstering his own. While it can be used on synthetic targets, it can potentially stagger weaker organic targets.
- Tech:
- Overload: A surge of electrical energy that can be unleashed at a range to shut down shields, deal damage, and stun organic enemies (I am going to assume Kaidan has taken the neural shock evolution of the power, allowing him to do so). This power requires the use of an omni-tool.
- Cryo-Blast: Fires a mass of super-cooled subatomic particles capable of snap-freezing targets within a certain radius. Requires the use of an omni-tool.
- Decryption: Basic hacking, usually to bypass security systems and electronic locks. With an omni-tool this can be done remotely, but can also be done conventionally
- Combat/Mundane:
- Weapons training: As a soldier Kaidan is proficient in his ages brand of mass-accelerator fired weapons, though he is most adept at the use of heavy pistols and assault rifles.
- Field Medicine: Sentinels are especially tailored to be combat support, and this includes the use of basic first aid. Most often this involves the application of medi-gel via omni-tool, but some basic knowledge is required in order to know when and where to do so.
- Hand-to-hand: Standard for all military personnel, Kaidan would be at least somewhat versed in basic unarmed combat.
